Synopsis: Zure is the title of a beautiful if rather unsettling track from sensei Ryuichi Sakamoto’s new album Async. In Japanese, the word means dissonance or slippage. Having listened to the album, it was Zure that evoked the strongest emotional response in me, immediately conjuring vivid imagery suggestive of a gap – a slippage – between dream and reality, perception and identity. The “noise” inherent to the piece of music, was reflected in the noise/grain of the accompanying visuals.A young woman awakes from the throes of sleep, paralysed to behold a man climbing into her bed who seduces her, only to disappear. She hides her skin beneath tattoos, while the man hides his face behind a mask. Is he the lover she yearns for, or a malevolent stranger? The young woman steps into her waking dream, seeking an answer from the masked man. She finds him, but try as she might their paths cross without meeting. Until finally, they come face to face, only to lose themselves.
